In her mid-twenties, Mom was diagnosed with the disease multiple sclerosis (MS). At the time, Mom & Dad had already lost one child, and were raising 4 young children, all under age ten. In those days there were no known treatments for MS. To this day there is still no cure. It was basically a death sentence back then, with a few months, or a few years to live at most. Life, however short, would be a debilitative downward spiral. However, although the disease had invaded Mom, it had yet to meet the fiery tenacity of her fighting spirit. Despite the lack of treatment options, and against hopeless odds, Mom and Dad began their 60+ year battle against MS, raising four children along the way.
We were too young to know or understand them all, or their consequences, but treatments most vividly remembered range from cutting edge to the subliminal, and sometimes experimental. Some involved taking family vacation road trips to specialists, and included spinal implant surgery, bee sting therapy (Dad gave them to Mom by placing honeybees on her limbs to sting her), snake venom therapy from a famous reptile / snake guy, acupuncture, chiropractic interventions, magnet therapy, countless medications, large doses of supplements, and on and on. Over time their efforts eventually gave way to walking sticks, wheelchairs, Go-Go's, electric lift chairs, electric lifts, hospital beds, and in the end, a final, peaceful, Christian rest. Mom passed away in her 80’s, never allowing MS to defeat her. In the end, she won, not according MS any victory in her passing. Thanks Mom, for being a shining example, and through our continued memories of you, for teaching us courage, resilience, tenacity, faith, hope, and love.
EFAKIDSIBS was formed in fond memory of, and devotion to Mom’s extraordinary and inspirational life, and her 60+ year personal battle against multiple sclerosis. Our hope is that her story, and others like it, will help shine lights of inspiration into the lives of many.
