DEAR COUSIN

Though first cousins, I am sorry to admit, and guilty as charged, that I have not been more in touch with your life’s story these many years. A few fast greetings at family reunions, and perhaps a brief summer visit here or there that I cannot now remember with any clarity, but otherwise we have had almost no contact.   

With that preface I will hasten to let you know my reason for communicating after all these years. Simply put, it is my way of saying a much overdue thank you for your service. I mean it in the most traditional sense, and also in a much more personal sense. As a teenage boy growing up, the Vietnam War was always looming in our minds. Would we be called to go, etc. More than I can express, please know that it was a real comfort knowing that you had gone on before and blazed a trail of courage, self-sacrifice, and patriotism, especially given the politics and issues associated with those times. I can’t pretend to know what it was like for you, but on this side of the war, just hearing “your cousin is over there”, were words that kept us all mindful of, and grateful for all the service and sacrifice associated with those times. Hopefully these sentiments with help to convey to you just how much your service meant to me, and so many others.
