Story #7: My Uncle: Welcome

Story #7

MY UNCLE

-----

He wasn’t really my uncle, but it was a name we gave him because we couldn’t help but feel closer to him than a friend. Though born into wealth, raised in mansions, and given privilege beyond most, that is not how I knew or remember my uncle. I never knew the story of how he walked or ran away from his posh upbringing, the money, fame, and all else that went with it. What was important to me, and always inspired me, was the grace and common touch that defined him.

By the time I met him he had served in the armed forces, married a wonderful farm girl, had 2 small kids, and owned a middleclass home, in a middleclass neighborhood, just like me. He was the kind of guy who would give you the shirt off his back. He was most at home in his local smalltown restaurant and in small church halls, talking with the folks about politics, religion, and the price of beef or gas. He found  comfort in the human spirit, his strong faith, and from being closest to where the rubber met the road.

When I get feeling too big for my britches, or thinking I deserve more from life, I think of my uncle.  I think of how much he could have had, what he gave up, and yet how rich he truly was. I realize just how much better off I am for having know him, and for following his wonderful, inspirational example.

Thanks Uncle!
