Story #6

THE GOOD DR.

At first glance, at least to me, my friend resembles this mild mannered Clark Kent type of guy. The type of guy who on the surface is hard to picture as someone who would carry a pocketknife, let alone one who would wield a hog leg. But in essence, “speak softly, but carry a big stick” describes him best.

To the world, and very much to his credit, he holds a doctorate degree, and he is a formidably intelligent man. But instead of what the world would consider very desirable qualifications, and laudable credentials, he wields something much more powerful and impactful, the common man’s touch. He does so with so much poise and easy grace that one is hard pressed not to realize the true quality of a wonderful human being when they meet him. And still, there is so much more beneath his surface than most men I have ever had the privilege to meet. He is a “you first”, “me last” kind of guy, with an exaggeratedly large heart for others. If one should ever doubt his humility and sincerity, one need only know that he pictures himself a far less than perfect man and holds to that belief as an unshakable truth. A truth that is a direct result of his steadfast belief in the assurance that there is only one Man that he knows to be perfect.

It seems so very unfortunate that we most often only ever get to know people superficially, and don’t   spend the time required to learn from them. Just knowing my friend on a surface level would be such a terrible waste. And although he is the kind of man that you can get to know and admire at first glance, from his postured gestures or the kindness and twinkle in his eyes, you can tell that there is a far greater wealth of strength hidden beneath. Under his humble, gentle surface, and inviting smile, there is a larger than life character for sure. It is also where his true character and value is ripe for discovery. In getting to know him, and by spend time with him, I realize that just being in his company I want to be a better person myself.

Now, sadly with aging issues, my heart goes out to him, not just in prayers for healing and relief, but in grateful thanksgiving for all that he has enlightened in me.
